Nuneaton-based sheet metal manufacturing company Unifabs Ltd is committed to nurturing the next generation of engineers through hands-on learning and industry experience. Here, Owen Evans, an apprentice currently undertaking an Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship, shares his journey so far and his aspirations upon completion.
Owen joined Unifabs a few months ago, beginning the first year of a Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship. He had previously started an apprenticeship with a Coventry-based company but decided to take his career in a new direction. Thanks to his prior learning, he was able to progress to a higher-level apprenticeship upon joining Unifabs.
He is currently working towards a Level 4 apprenticeship (incorporating an HNC), studying through Unifabs’ training partner Train’d Up, a Birmingham-based education provider, while gaining real-world experience with Unifabs Academy.
Under the guidance of Dan Ellis, H&S and Quality Manager, Owen has initially been focusing on quality control, learning about its critical role in manufacturing.

What’s one skill you’ve improved the most since starting your Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship?
I’ve definitely improved my ability to use a Vernier and other precise measuring tools. Understanding different measurement methods has been crucial for ensuring quality in manufacturing.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in manufacturing or fabrication?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s always better to be certain about what you’re doing rather than guessing. Asking for clarification helps you learn, develop confidence, and avoid mistakes.
What’s the best thing about being part of the Unifabs team?
The people. Everyone here is incredibly supportive, which makes learning so much easier. There’s always someone ready to help if you need guidance, and that makes a big difference in a hands-on industry like manufacturing.
What’s one thing about the workplace that makes it an enjoyable place to learn?
The friendly environment. It’s a great place to develop skills because there’s always someone willing to offer advice and share their experience, which really helps with learning and growth.
How have you seen yourself grow since joining Unifabs?
I’ve gained a much better understanding of the fabrication and manufacturing industry. I now know what to look for in different sections of production and the quality control challenges that come with it.
Where do you see yourself by the end of your apprenticeship?
I want to be fully qualified and competent in my role. Ideally, I’d like to have direct contact with customers, helping them solve any manufacturing challenges that arise.
Just for fun…
Top 3 films or TV shows?
I enjoy a mix of action, comedy, and crime, with Hot Fuzz, The Hangover, and Breaking Bad being particular favourites.
What would you most like to max out your credit card on?
Beer! – Nothing beats a good night out with mates.
What was your first paying job?
My first experience in the work environment was as a warehouse operative. It was a great way to understand the importance of teamwork and efficiency.
