As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the talent, dedication and hard work of our apprentices at Unifabs. This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Samuel Baugh, a second-year Metal Fabricator apprentice who’s making his mark in the workshop and beyond.
Samuel joined Unifabs to develop his skills in metal fabrication and has quickly grown into a key part of the team. He’s supported throughout his journey by Matt Grealy, Technical Director, who leads and oversees all our apprenticeship programmes, alongside Ashley Roberts, R&D Coordinator and the wider team.
Matt Grealy said of Samuel, “He’s shown real dedication and determination. Seeing our apprentices grow and take on more responsibility is always rewarding. We’re proud of the progress he’s made so far.”
We caught up with Samuel to find out more about his journey, his experiences and what life as an apprentice is really like.

Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your role?
I’m Samuel Baugh, a second-year Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprentice. I mainly work on robot welding during the day, and I also collaborate with office staff when needed.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship so far?
Being able to prove myself through consistency and finding my own ways to improve. It’s really satisfying to see progress from my own hard work.
What are you learning at the moment?
I’m working on jobs for a leading agricultural equipment manufacturer and the jig that’s being designed for it. I’m learning new techniques and getting hands-on experience every day.
What’s the most challenging part of your apprenticeship?
Balancing my work and social life can be tricky — I have to plan things around both my studies and work tasks. But I’ve found that making a plan and spreading the workload evenly helps me stay on track without feeling rushed.
What skills or knowledge have you gained that you find most valuable in your role?
Welding techniques are something I use every day, and I’ve also learned how to manage workloads while hitting targets. Both are skills I’ll continue to use throughout my career.
How has your role evolved since your first year?
Since my first year, my role in robot welding has progressed from just linishing parts to working as a robot welding technician, building and running jobs independently. I’ve gained a lot more responsibility and confidence since starting my apprenticeship.

Watching conspiracy theory programmes.

Samuel’s journey shows just how rewarding an apprenticeship can be. With dedication, curiosity and a willingness to learn, he’s growing his skills, taking on new challenges and preparing for a bright future in metal fabrication and manufacturing.
